Diathermy - Post Treatment Care
Whilst Diathermy is a very precise treatment and causes minimal trauma to the treated surrounding skin, it is a technique that involves delivering intense heat through a fine probe to block the flow of blood in a vessel or to dehydrate and destroy the skin tissue of an unwanted lesion. It is therefore to be expected that there will be some normal and temporary side effects.
Side effects will vary from client to client and each type of lesion treated is likely to take on a different appearance within the first 2 weeks of healing. Please take a moment to read the information below on what to expect after a diathermy treatment and the requirements of aftercare instructions.
Although most lesions can be treated within 1 to 2 treatments. It is important to note that diathermy does not prevent further lesions from developing and may require maintenance treatments. If a second treatment is required, please allow at least 4-6 weeks after your first treatment.
EXPECT: Discomfort, swelling, redness which generally resolves within 2-3 hours post treatment.
AVOID: Touching or scratching the area the skin was treated to avoid infection and reopening of the treated vessels. This includes avoiding vigorous blowing of the nose if nose capillaries have been treated. Do not pick any small scabs that may form. If the skin gets itchy as it heals, press the area if needed and avoid scratching the area.
Avoid spending prolonged time out in the sun and make sure to apply sunscreen with SPF 30 or higher daily, for the first week after treatment - we recommend Aspect sunscreen that we sell online and in clinic.
RECOMMENDED: A cold compress may be applied to alleviate any discomfort or swelling. Keep the treated area free and cool from friction until all skin reactions have subsided and avoid anything that can make the skin feel hot, such as hot steamy showers, spa baths, saunas, and vigorous exercises, for 1-2 days. A minimum of SPF 30+ worn every day. We recommend Aspect sunscreen that we sell online and in clinic. We recommend using an antiseptic topical ointment such as Betadine to keep the area clean as it heals.

POTENTIAL SIDE EFFECTS EXPLAINED:
Vascular lesions
Treated vascular lesions such as telangiectasia also known as ‘broken capillaries’, spider veins and cherry angiomas can darken in appearance or become dry or scab-like following diathermy treatment. This is normal, and they will fade as the skin goes through its natural process of healing. In some cases, some vascular lesions will immediately disappear.
Sebaceous hyperplasia, seborrheic keratosis, milia, skin tags and benign moles.
You may experience white spots on the treated areas immediately after diathermy treatment which is a result of the tissue being cauterised. Slight scabbing and crusting can be expected on these spots 1-2 days following treatment that will fall off naturally.
